It was therefore intriguing for our team at Yooodle to read a recent article in The Guardian, referencing an analysis that showed an increasing tendency among homebuyers to pay more for properties that incorporate heat pumps or other low-carbon technology.
Signs of prospective purchasers putting a greater emphasis on energy criteria
According to the research, almost six in 10 (59%) would-be buyers expressed a willingness to pay more for a home if it was mainly powered by renewable energy. Sure enough, it was found that the typical home in England or Wales in which a heat pump was fitted attracted a higher price on average than properties lacking this technology.
The newspaper also reported that 71% of participants in the study regarded a home’s energy performance certificate (EPC) rating as playing an important role in their considerations as to whether to buy the given property.
EPC ratings serve as a measure of a property’s energy performance. So, with further energy price rises anticipated this autumn, it is hardly a surprise that nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they placed greater emphasis on the importance of EPC ratings than they did a year ago.
With most residential properties in the UK still dependent on fossil fuels for heating, hot water, and cooking, we only expect the trend of prioritising energy efficiency in a home purchase to intensify in the months and years to come.
